Gladstone Engineering Alliance Major Industry, Energy & Manufacturing Conference

What will Gladstone need to remain a great place to live and work while continuing to grow as an industrial and energy centre? That question was at the heart of the GEA Major Industry, Energy & Manufacturing Conference, where CQP Director Matt Rebbeck joined industry leaders to discuss the opportunities and challenges ahead for the region.

Gladstone has been shaped by generations of local workers, families and businesses. Its strong industrial base, energy demand and abundant renewable energy resources give the region an important role in Australia’s energy and manufacturing future—and an opportunity to create lasting benefits for the community.

Making growth work for the community

Significant investment is flowing into Central Queensland. The panel highlighted that industry, government and the community will need to work together so growth is well planned and delivers lasting local benefits. Coordinating projects, services and infrastructure can help the region make the most of new opportunities while managing the pressures that come with change.

Building skills and local opportunities

Finding enough skilled workers is one of the biggest challenges facing the region. As major projects progress, there will be growing demand for people with a wide range of skills. Supporting training and local career pathways, while making Gladstone an attractive place to settle, will be important to building a strong and sustainable workforce.

Shaping Gladstone’s future together

A clear message from the discussion was that everyone has a role in shaping Gladstone’s future. Investment and infrastructure matter, but so do housing, services, liveability and a strong sense of community. These are the things that help people choose Gladstone as a place to live, work and raise a family.

By listening to local voices and working together, industry, government and the community can build on Gladstone’s strengths, respond to workforce pressures and ensure the benefits of growth are shared across the region.

CQP thanks GEA for bringing people together and creating space for important conversations about the opportunities and challenges ahead for Central Queensland.
