Biloela Hydragons Qualify for Hydrogen Grand Prix World Finals
Central Queensland Power (CQP) is proud to congratulate the Biloela State High School Hydragons team on an outstanding performance at the 2026 Hydrogen Grand Prix Central Queensland World Qualifiers.
Competing against some of Central Queensland’s brightest young innovators, the Hydragons secured second place overall and first place in the modified category, earning their place at the Hydrogen Grand Prix World Finals.
The team demonstrated remarkable endurance, engineering skill and teamwork throughout the four-hour race, completing an impressive 665 laps in their hydrogen-powered vehicle.
CQP has proudly supported the Hydragons and the Central Queensland Hydrogen Grand Prix program for the past three years. The program provides students with hands-on experience in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) while introducing them to emerging technologies that will help shape Australia's energy future. CQP's sponsorship helps provide local students with opportunities to develop practical skills, solve real-world challenges and gain exposure to careers in innovation and renewable energy.
Held in Gladstone, the Hydrogen Grand Prix brings together school teams from across the region to design, build and race hydrogen-powered cars in a challenging endurance competition. The event is recognised globally for encouraging creativity, problem solving and collaboration among students while showcasing the potential of hydrogen technologies.
In addition to sponsoring the Hydragons team, CQP attended the event with an information stall in the sponsors' area, where representatives spoke with students, teachers, families and community members about renewable energy developments across Central Queensland.
As part of the competition, CQP's Lachlan Mitchell served as a pre-race judge, assessing the engineering, design and innovation demonstrated by the twenty competing teams before they took to the track. Lachlan was also interviewed during the event, where he highlighted the importance of investing in programs that inspire young people to explore science, technology and renewable energy career pathways.
The excitement continued right through to the finish, with Kim Stone from CQP waving the chequered flag to mark the end of the four-hour endurance race and celebrate the achievements of all participating teams.
CQP congratulates the Hydragons on their exceptional result and wishes them every success as they prepare to represent Central Queensland on the world stage.
